When you’ve had a long week at work the only thing you want to do when Saturday finally comes is relax. It’s important that you get some downtime but if you’re a motivated person and you want to improve yourself, there are a lot of more useful things you could be doing than lying on the sofa watching TV for hours on end. These are 3 of the best ways to spend your free time if you’re career focused.

Improve Your Education

A lot of people consider going back into education in later life. It improves your career prospects and helps you get promotions, or even change to a new career entirely if that’s what you want to do. The only problem is, most people can’t afford to leave their job and go back into education full-time. Not getting paid is a huge hurdle and most people can’t sustain themselves for that long without an income. But the thing is, you don’t have to do that anymore.

There are plenty of ways that you can improve your education in your spare time, while you’re still working. You can get an msw degree online in your spare time. You decide when you do the work and set your own pace so you can do it in your free time. There are also plenty of great online resources where you can learn the same skills you’ll learn in a degree. The only problem with that is you won’t actually get the qualification so if you’re trying to get qualified for a new job, it isn’t for you. But if you just want to improve your skill set to help you in your current job, it’s a good option.

Train Your Brain

The brain is a muscle and it needs a regular workout if you want it to stay strong. That’s why it’s always a good idea to spend some of your free time training your brain. You can do puzzles like sudoku or crosswords to flex your brain and there are some great apps you can download too. Lumosity has all sorts of games and puzzles to help improve your brain function. Regular training will improve concentration and problem solving skills which come in very handy when you’re at work.

Volunteer

Volunteering in your spare time has so many benefits. Most importantly, it’s incredibly rewarding to spend your spare time helping others and improving their lives. You’ll feel much better doing that than you would if you’d spent the whole weekend lazing around at home. On top of that, it’s great for your career. Volunteering shows that you’re a hard working, motivated person which employers are always keen to see. It also helps you to develop new skills outside of the workplace which may come in handy at a later date, especially when you’re writing job applications.

If you’re really serious about your career then you need to stop wasting your spare time. Remember to make sure that you’re getting enough rest, but also ensure that you’re spending your time wisely.
