IT skills

Even if you don’t feel like you’re going to be doing a job that has any connection with IT whatsoever, IT skills are pretty much essential no matter what kind of job your after. The reality is that the modern world runs on IT and if you don’t understand it then you’re just showing that you’re not in touch with the modern world. Things like IT apprenticeships are a great way to improve your skill set. That way you can show employers that, even if you’re not going to working in IT specifically, you understand the needs of the 21st-century world of work.


It is incredibly rare that you will find yourself working entirely on your own. Almost all jobs involve working as part of a team or at the very least staying in contact with other people within the business. Because of that, there are few skills more essential to an employer than the ability to clearly communicate with those around you. Make sure you have examples of ways you’ve done just that in the past so that you can demonstrate your communications skills both in your application and in your interview.

The ability to take the initiative

For the longest time, it felt as though employers just wanted people who could follow orders and get the job done. However, that is very different now and employers really want people who can bring their own perspective to the business. You need to be able to show a prospective employer that you’re able to take control of a situation and move forward with it without needing every little detail to be explicitly explained to you.

Of course, this is just the first stage in trying to make sure that you’re as irresistible to employers as possible. The reality is that, on top of these things, every employer has specific things that they really want from any candidate. You will almost always be able to find those things in the job description as well as on the business’s website in the sections where they talk about the overall attitude of the business. The key is to make sure that you do your research in order to be sure that you know exactly what an employer wants.
