There’s a popular saying that states the “more you learn the more you earn”, and for many people the reason they undertake academic education and especially vocational education is to put themselves in a better financial position, on the basis the skills and knowledge derived from their education makes them more ‘valuable’ to an employer.

However, the benefits of learning are not limited to financial advantage; for instance, the expansion of self in terms of your own personal development and the positive impact on your self-esteem, self-confidence, and feelings of self-worth shouldn’t be overlooked.

Whilst many academic courses don’t necessarily prepare us to be emotionally intelligent, we often find ourselves in a better position to deal with life’s curveballs and rejections because, in ourselves, we feel more stable based on the educational backing we have behind us.

That said, education doesn’t have to be in the form of universities and colleges; for instance if you are wanting to perfect your English language skills then an IELTS tutor might be more appropriate, and if you’re in the creative industries sites like Lynda.com offer some great technical skills training, though nowadays, most people can learn from watching YouTube videos.

The increased level of self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence that you’ll get from learning is not only a great way to alleviate common mood ailments, but a fantastic way to propel you to creating the lifestyle you desire – particularly if you’re a creative, as most creatives are plagued with self-doubt and the insatiable need for validation, due to their art being so subjective.

Then, there are the financial benefits of advancing your education.

In today’s world, most people are looking to earn an extra source of income or at least improve their earning ability either by being paid more or having more clients beat a path to their door on the basis of their superior knowledge.

In a nutshell, if you want to make more money then all you need to do is create more value – be this to an employer, a client, or another stakeholder.

If you want to earn more then you simply need to create more value in terms of the end result you are providing; one of the best ways to provide more value is to get more education.

That said, this education should be focused on achieving a particular tangible outcome that actually does add value, rather than taking a course for the sake of it.

You want to have a laser focus when it comes to education, as education is ultimately an investment – both in time and money; indeed the cost of education can be incredibly high and whilst it can provide great value, you need to really investigate whether the specific course you’re interested in will provide adequate return on investment; particularly if you’re thinking of paying over nine thousand pounds a year for a three-year degree course.

In summary, education is a great way to expand your mind, increase your earning potential, improve your self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence… but learning isn’t limited to academic contexts and you want to make sure you invest your resources wisely.
