Moving house is stressful, there’s no getting away from the fact! It’s quite rightly placed high up on the list of stressful times in life. You dream of a smooth moving process and you have an almost romantic view of stepping into your new home, (which is clean and sparkly) for the very first time.In reality from the very moment you put your house on the market, up until opening the door of your new home for the first time you are plunged into a period of chaos and disruption. Why do we do it? It’s a wonder why any of us embarks on the process in the first place.

I suppose we do it for many reasons, a new start, we grow out of our homes, move areas and change jobs. Moving house is exciting as well as being a little frustrating. With lots of planning in the initial stages, the more easier the move will be.

You have plenty of time

The whole process of moving house can take months, if not years, if the housing market is a little stagnant. There is so much red tape relating to the legalities of moving. As soon as you decide to move house, start to prepare by decluttering your home. Go through every room in your house and sort your things into keep, sell, throw away or give to charity piles. This will make packing so much easier and you won’t end up taking unwanted items to your new house.

Decide on which company to use for the actual moving process, find local movers in your area and ask for quotes.

Start to stockpile packing materials and boxes as moving day approaches, this will help you avoid chucking everything into black bin bags.

Pack

The more organised you pack, the easier it will be to unpack at your new home. See packing as an opportunity to get rid of any final items you don’t want. Label everything carefully according to which room they belong to, this will make unpacking so much easier!

Carefully wrap fragile items and mark the storage boxes as “fragile”.

Moving day

Moving day can be stressful, even the best laid plans can go awry! The timings on moving day don’t always go to plan and you could possibly spend a lot of time waiting around for transference of money etc. Pack plenty of snacks and don’t pack the kettle!

If you have young children and or pets arrange for them to spend the day with friends and family, so that you can fully concentrate on the task.

Give the property a thorough clean before moving out and take plenty of cleaning supplies to your new property. It may not have been left as clean as you would like.

A good tip is to pack an overnight bag for the first night in your new home. It may be late in the day when you get your keys and the last thing you will want to do is rummage around in boxes looking for your pyjamas!

Finally remember to take meter readings in your old and new property and ensure power and facilities are connected and turned on.
